Lombardy is one of the most famous Italian regions in terms of industry and fashion, but also for its lakes and cities, discover with me 5 days in Lombardy. Lake Maggiore, Como, Garda, and cities such as Milan and Bergamo and Sirmione attract millions of tourists every year. Do not be frightened by the cold or bad weather, Lombardy is a green land and perfect for relaxation and nature lovers.
There are 3 international airports: Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Orio al Serio (Bergamo) all of three are well-connected with Milan city center. You can also reach Milan by train or bus in a few hours, from France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
DAY 1 MILAN
Milan is my second home town, I always recommend everyone to visit it, there are really interesting things to visit. But not everyone appreciates this city so if you are a lover of architecture I suggest you read my post on “Milan in 2 days“.
In just one day to see the most important monuments, you can concentrate on Dom Square and The Gallery, Sforzesco Castle and Navigli. Want to know how to get to the center of Milan? Read here!
DAY 2 LAKE MAGGIORE
From Milan to get to the first stop on Lake Maggiore which is Sesto Calende, you have two possibilities. Regional train € 12 per person round trip, duration 1h, there are trains from morning to night. Another possibility to rent a car to visit the area is the best option considering your trip. To rent a car I recommend doing it directly at the airport which costs less.
Lake Maggiore is one of the favorite destinations of people who live in Milan and want nature and relaxation. It is a very quiet area, full of nice restaurants and bars with a lake terrace. To visit in the area you will find Angera Castle and Santa Caterina del Sasso, a convent built in the rock of the twelfth century. Read my new post “Lake Maggiore in 3 days“.
Between Milan and Lake Maggiore you can stop to the Sacro Monte of Varese, so beautiful.
DAY 3 LAKE COMO
Lake Como is another of the most visited destinations in the area, if you have decided to stay in the area more than a day, read my post “Lake Como in 3 days“. From Milan, in 50min you will arrive in Como, a very pretty city. From there you can move to Bellagio, well known for its 5-star hotels overlooking the lake. How to get to Lake Como?
DAY 4 BERGAMO
Bergamo is a beautiful city northeast of Milan, 50km from the city. You can arrive by train (duration 1h, 12 € return) or by car. You can visit the city during the day without stopping to sleep, here all the details.
DAY 5 SIRMIONE
Sirmione is the farthest among the cities near Milan, at 134km, if you like to drive you can visit it in one day. If you don’t want to drive there is always the option of the train (2h) getting off at Peschiera Del Garda Railway Station and taking the LN026 bus. Check prices and timetables here.
The city is famous for its walls and the spas present in the various hotels, the atmosphere is excellent for a couple or a romantic weekend.
