We begin our road trip to the Costa Brava with a classic: Tossa de Mar. Just 20 minutes from the famous Lloret de Mar, Tossa is considered one of the pearls of Catalonia, with Cadaques, for its lifestyle and for the cost of the houses.
Easy to get to from any airport, Tossa receives hundreds of tourists every year, most of them from England and Russia, who often buy their homes here. This small village of even 10,000 inhabitants remains my favorite and I’ll explain why.
HOW TO GET TO TOSSA DE MAR:
The nearest airport is Girona, where 50% of Ryanair flights will land. From here to Tossa de Mar, if you have decided that you do not want to rent a car (which I always recommend for the Costa Brava trip) you can take a bus. There are two companies that circulate, Sarfa and Sagalés for both € 10 one way ticket price. Times can change depending on the season, I advise you to take a look at this web.
In case you leave from Barcelona center, you will need to take a bus from Estacio del Nord and in 1.20h you will be in Tossa, € 25 return. Schedules and online tickets in Moventis web. Do not wait for too much to buy tickets, especially in summer, they end quickly.
Other distances:
Calella de Palafrugell – Tossa de Mar 70km
Blanes – Tossa de Mar 80km
Cadaques – Tossa de Mar 115km
WHERE TO SLEEP:
I’ve often been to Tossa de Mar, and among all the hotels I’ve tried, I can recommend the best ones. Pension Codolar € 50 per night, excellent quality/price, clean and not at all noisy.
Granados boutique house a wonderful hotel perfect for any romantic occasion with pool and terrace/lounge bar sea view. If booked in time, the room can cost you € 120.
WHAT TO SEE:
Tossa de Mar castle is the main attraction of the city, open 24h, and free admission, you can take a ride around the walls or go past the Remnants of Gothic Church to get to the top where there is the lighthouse.
If you go to Mar Menuda beach you will find a very nice observation point from where you can admire the city and the castle.
BEACHES:
In the city center, there are three beaches, the main one that I discourage if you need to relax. My favorite is Codolar beach is small, quiet, and do not try to sell you anything. Lastly Mar Menuda beach famous for the snorkeling activities that they organize.
If you have rented a car you can also go to Cala Pola near Tossa, you will have to park in the camping to get to the beach.
WHERE TO EAT:
Tossa offers a good Mediterranean cuisine, I’ve tried in so many places but my top 5 is:
La Rocca de Tossa = Maybe not very nice but certainly, you eat typical fish dishes cooked at the moment with taste in the sea (try the Zarzuela and Cim y Tomba). Average price.
La Lluna = It is inside the castle you can eat very good tapas, here it is necessary to book because it is always full. Average/economical price.
Can Sophia = It is inside the Granados boutique house, very good and beautiful. Medium/high price.
La Placeta = right at the entrance of the castle, the menu costs € 16, perfect for a great lunch. Average/economical price
Ta Thai bar = Good and cheap, for spicy food lovers.
