A small city 50km from Barcelona, Vilafranca del Penedes is a territory that provides a wine of quality with a Designation of Origin (DO). That offers an inviting and captivating experience with the new project: “The Carretera del Vi”. A great project for wine lovers and to know the good wine that this area offers. Each winery offers the possibility to do interesting pairings with good prices.
HOW TO GET TO VILAFRANCA:
Vilafranca is a Spanish municipality of the autonomous community of Catalonia, 50 km from Barcelona. The ideal way to enjoy all that La Carretera del Vi has to offer is by car. Later on, after this initial phase, it will be possible to do the route by bicycle or on foot using an alternative way more suited for this type of transit. There is only one winery that is located in Vilafranca city and reachable by train (Pinord Winery), the others are far from the city center.
VIJAZZ
Started in 2007, the ViJazz festival has shown that wines and cava (Spanish champagne) are perfectly combined with jazz. It is celebrated during the second weekend of July and during three days. The historic city center change to enjoy the region’s wines while listening to the best jazz artists for free and outdoors.
Don’t worry if you come from Barcelona, there are night buses from the bus station (not so far from the train station) that leave you in Barcelona city center.
Visitors can taste up wine and champagne from about forty of the best Penedès cellars. Participate in tastings and combinations led by winemakers and sommeliers. Offering a gastronomic an accurate of cheese, ham, anchovies, foie gras, and oysters. You can use the same glass, there are little fountains in order to wash your glass. I suggest you bring with you something to eat if you don’t want to spend too much and to book in advance some good restaurants.
WINE TOURISM
Vilafranca del Penedes is well known for its vineyards and wineries which are part of the Denominación de Origen Penedes. The cellars of this area collaborate in the project of the Carretera del Vi. The Carretera del Vi is an Eno-touristic proposal that allows wine lovers to discover the old route of the DO Penedès. It is the first initiative of the 13 wineries of the route, with the support of the 7 municipalities.
