In the last six months, with a group of friends, I embarked on the discovery of the “Carretera del Vi“. A project that includes various wineries in the area of the DO Penedes (north of Barcelona). A great project for wine lovers and to know the good wine that this area offers, one of them is the Cava & Hotel Mastinell. Num 1 in booking.com list in Vilafranca del Penedes, 5 * hotel, that offers wine tasting and much more than that.
THE CAVA & HOTEL MASTINELL:
The hotel belongs to the Olivia Hotel chain, although it remains one of the few 5-star hotels. The Cava & Hotel Mastinell is located at 1.5km of Vilafranca del Penedes, you can get there by car (the easier way) or by train (from Barcelona) and then take a taxi.
The shape of the hotel resembles several bottles on top of each other, the ceilings and windows are the most beautiful part of the hotel. Room prices range from € 240 for a double room to a € 500 suite. The suite has a bathtub in front of the window, I think it can be a great present for Valentine day or some anniversary.
Breakfast always included and according to Booking.com excellent. I have not really tried the hotel restaurant, but it seems that it has received good reviews.
If you want to spend time at the beach I recommend you Sitges, which is located just 30km from the Hotel.
WINE TASTING:
Cava & Hotel Mastinell offers a tour of the shop + a wine/cava tasting every weekend of the month. The visit, in general, lasts 2 hours, in my opinion, one of the best tours of the Carretera del Vi, thanks to the help of Josep, an excellent guide. 🙂
Once the visit is complete, which includes choosing the techniques used to raise the products and ending with bottling, we can start to try it. It deals with tasting 2 Cava (Spanish champagne) and 1 wine for a total of 14 €. The only negative point for me is there isn’t the possibility of pairing with some cheeses, which other wineries allow you to do.
Other methods to try the Mas Tinell house wine, you can choose between pairing workshops, learn to achieve the perfect harmony between food and wines. They will teach you this traditional method of pressing. (Activity only available during harvest time.)

Being a 5 * hotel, there are various services related to the world of wine that you can find:
- Wine therapy sessions: you can enjoy relaxing wine and champagne baths or individual massages with essential oils.
- Visit the vineyards on foot, by bicycle or by hot air balloon: choose your means of transport and enjoy a unique walk among vineyards.
- Segway route: know the origin of our wines and cava in the most original and fun way.
