5 days in Veneto: the northeast of Italy

5 days in Veneto will not be enough to see all that this beautiful region of Northern Italy offers. An area rich in culture, gastronomy, legendary cities such as Verona or Venice is part of this wonderful heritage. Today’s tour is more centered in the area from Venice to the Alps (Cortina).

The airport in the region is Venice Marco Polo. If you want to rent a car always do it at the airport, but I do not recommend it because it is expensive to leave the car in a car park in Venice (40 € / day). Another option is to rent it once you’ve visited Venice and Burano.

DAY 1 VENICE

The unmissable Venice, with its “Calle” where you can get lost and discover beautiful shops and restaurants. Venice can be visited in a couple of days, I have always seen it in 1 day. I recommend booking a hotel (you can use the Booking.com widget) near the train station. Moving around with a suitcase for bridges is not very comfortable. If you want more info on Venice read here!

DAY 2 BURANO – MURANO

A day in Burano and Murano is more than enough, they are small islands a few kilometers from the Venice lagoon reachable by boat. Such as? Read here! My advice is to start the day very early with Murano or go directly to Burano.

In Murano, it is typical to enter homes to see the glass working directly, but having seen all of them. While Burano, the island with pastel colors, although very small it is very beautiful to visit (don’t go if it rains). In the post “Day trip in Burano” I will explain everything to you, do not miss it. Book your trip here.

DAY 3 PADUA

Padua is a very special city for me, it must be seen but above all, it must be lived, it is a city with an unbeatable artistic heritage. Just an hour from Venice by train, you can visit it during the day. In one day I recommend you visit the Basilica of San Antonio, the Palace of Reason (where you find the city market) and Prato Della Valle. If you have more time, the Scrovegni Chapel and the botanical garden. Villa Pisani is another point that I recommend to visit but only if you have rented a car because it is located outside the city.

Bassano del Grappa

DAY 4 BASSANO DEL GRAPPA

Bassano del Grappa is a small town 1 hour by train from Padua and 1h15 from Venice. This city can be visited in a day and is famous for the “Grappa” (grape-based pomace brandy of Italian origin that contains 35 to 60 percent alcohol, very strong). I recommend you try Grappa, there are many types and tastes, although I personally don’t like it. In Bassano you can visit Ponte Vecchio and walk the streets if visiting the city at Christmas the environment is very beautiful, the Christmas markets are always a good excuse.

DAY 5 CORTINA

Cortina d’Ampezzo is one of the most famous mountain resorts in Italy. It is a 2-hour drive from Venice but can be reached by public transport, with a bus from the airport (num29). Cortina is beautiful both in winter and in summer, but if you are expert skiers it offers one of the most beautiful slopes in the Alps (together with Mont Blanc). In summer you can take great walks and visit the area’s lakes, such as Lake Misurina.
