One of the most beautiful places in Bavaria is located in the northwest, it is Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A mandatory stop if you are visiting this region, Rothenburg is romantic and its many bell towers will make you fall in love. Check my post “5 days in South Germany“.
HOW TO GET TO ROTHENBURG
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located 110km from Stuttgart airport. The closest airport is Nuremberg at 80km, depending on your itinerary, one airport or another will be better.
You can reach the city by train, from any major German city or by bus. In my case, I chose to rent a car and parked at the Hotel Gasthof Rödertor for free. I recommend this 2-star hotel with breakfast, it is not central but it is very comfortable and excellent value for money.
DAY TRIP
The city can be easily visited during the day, the best time is before Christmas (visiting the German Christmas Museum) or in summer. I recommend first of all the tour of the wall that surrounds the city, they are less than 5km in total. During the walk, you will see tourist spots like the
The bell towers of the city are one of the most beautiful views in Bavaria, the most famous being the Plönlein and the Markusturm u. Röder-Arch. From the west tower of the city, the Burgtor you can get to the Burggarten.
For gastronomic recommendation, I suggest you try the restaurant of Romantik Hotel Markusturm, high quality-price food. Remember in this part of Germany people have dinner starting from 18 and the kitchen closed at 21. Don’t forget to try the Schneeball (snowball), which is a pastry made from shortcrust pastry and is especially popular in the area of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
AROUND ROTHENBURG
The first stop of the day is Triberg, a small tourist town, excellent for stopping for lunch. The second stop in the city is the small town of Schonach, where the world’s largest cuckoo clock is located.
Another recommendation is the city of Tübingen, a very famous university city in Germany. The city is very nice to visit, especially the part of the castle 5min from the center on walking. The last one very close to is The Lichtenstein Castle the world-famous Black Forest castle. Check the entire itinerary in my post “5 days in South Germany“.
