Palma de Mallorca tour: discover the city

Palma de Mallorca deserves to be visited. Besides being one of the most populated cities in the Balearics, it is also the most complete in terms of services. Palma can be easily visited during the day or during a weekend, exploring the surrounding areas. Mallorca is an island to discover, Palma can be just your first stop of the trip, read here for more information.

HOW TO GET THERE

Palma has an airport (PMI) just a few kilometers from the city. A lot of low costs and not all year airlines offer good airfares (in winter you can get to pay less than € 30 for a return ticket). The airport of Palma is very large but it is easy to be located on the ground floor arrivals and the 4th for departures. Once you arrive at the airport you have two options: rent a car or take public transport.  you can take bus 1 or 21 that will take you to the center for just € 5 one way. Fares and timetables.

There is the option to book a transfer too, look here! For more information about rent a car read here!

WHAT TO SEE

We start our tour from Plaza Mayor, a beautiful square north of the city. In the city of Palma, you will find many historic houses marked on the map, such as Can Forteza Rey, Casa de Les Mitges, Can Vivot, Can Barceló and Can Olesa. Many of these houses are private and you can only admire them from outside.

In the south of the city, you will find the Arab Baths, (€ 2.50 admission, which I honestly do not recommend). The diocesan museum, included with the visit to the Cathedral (7 €), if you want to get on Cathedral of Palma roof is 12 € and with prior reservation. In front of the church, you will find the royal palace of Almudaina, admission € 7, the visit is highly recommended. Also in the area, you can visit the Bartolomé March foundation has a beautiful terrace.

King's garden

After this cultural visit, I recommend going through the King’s garden, and the Paseo del Borne. From there you will surely see the Belvedere castle, a few kilometers from the city, located on a hill. Here you will find all the info to visit it.

WHERE TO SLEEP

Palma is full of hotels and tourist apartments for all types of travelers and budgets. I recommend staying in the part of the historic center but towards the north of the city, for example, the Plaza Mayor area. If you want to stay in the harbor area know that it is full of bars and clubs, if you want to relax it is the worst area.

WHERE TO EAT

Eating well in Mallorca is very simple, products such as “Sobrasada” or “Ensaimadas” make gastronomy famous throughout Europe. Across the island, there are 9 Michelin restaurants, most of which are located in Palma. I recommend Marc Fosh (1 * Michelin), good environment and tasting menu starting from € 29 (during the week). For the famous “Ensaimadas” there are many places but one of the oldest are those of Can Joan de S’Aigo. I recommend going in the morning, you will have much more choice.
