Catalonia is a region full of resources and scenarios, from mountains to virgin beaches, from large cities to medieval cities. Today we will leave the city for our Catalonia medieval tour in 3 days. A tour starting from Girona and ending in Figueras. I love this region a lot, it’s been my home for 7 years and I think there are few regions in the world that are so complete from every point of view.
DAY 1 GIRONA – PERATALLADA
The first day we start from Girona, medieval city par excellence. Just one hour from Barcelona, this city is very famous for its cultural heritage. A beautiful city that if you have a whole day to visit it is better because it’s worth it. If you want more info read this post about the city of Girona.
Between Girona and Peratallada there is the town of Pals, a small, very beautiful medieval village. To visit it 3 hours is enough but if you pass by then stop. Once visited Pals, the next stop is Peratallada, another medieval village. It was declared a historical-artistic site because it is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval architecture centers in Catalonia. It maintains a great harmony in its rural architecture, through its narrow and winding streets, as well as the numerous arches and passages.
Both Pals and Peratallada are very close to the Costa Brava, do you want to know more? Read here!
DAY 2 BANYOLES – BESALÚ
Today we climb towards the north of Catalonia where we find the pond of Banyoles. A place maybe not medieval but very romantic and perfect for a stop before Besalú. A great place to find nature, sport, and fun for young and old. On the municipality page, you can find all the info and the agenda with the events.
Next stop Besalú, among the famous píu medieval cities of northern Spain. A beautiful city, whose origin was the castle of Besalú, built on top of a hill. In a few hours you can visit: the bridge, the Jewish baths, the church of the monastery of San Pedro and San Julián, the old hospital of pilgrims, the house of Cornellá, the church of San Vicente.
If you have time during the day I recommend going from Castellfullit de la Roca. A village a few kilometers from Besalú, a great backdrop for its position at the top of the steep mountain.
DAY 3 PERALADA – FIGUERES
During the third and last day, we will visit the castle of Peralada, which is not possible to visit inwardly. The castle park which can be visited (opening hours and price) the visit will not last more than a few hours. The castle is very famous for the classical music festival that is celebrated every year in July and August.
The rest of the day we will dedicate it to the visit of Figueras, the third Catalan city most visit for the famous Museum of Dalí (price and opening hours). The Dalí museum is one of the mandatory stops, even if you are not a fan of the artist. Apart from the museum, returning to our medieval path in the city of Figueres is the San Fernando castle (prices and opening hours). The San Fernando castle has a pentagonal plan that occupies a total area of 550,000 m2.
