5 days in South Germany

For the 5 days in South Germany, I chose to visit some villages in the Bavaria region and some of the Baden region. Both beautiful regions, which I recommend to visit also separately in several days. Winter is an excellent season for the Christmas atmosphere, but very often restaurants and tourist attractions are closed.

5 DAYS IN SOUTH GERMANY INFO

To reach this area you can use various airports, it all depends on the tour you want to do. You have at your disposal the airport of Nuremberg, Stuttgart, and Munich. Just remember that if you rent a car, the airport must be the same otherwise you will pay the rental return fee.

Motorways in Germany are free, it’s very important, on this trip I drove 750km. Very often there is no speed limit, but be careful when passing through the villages. Normally there are always public car parks unless, in cities such as Tübingen, there is no need to book hotel parking.

For my trip I booked these hotels, all with breakfast included and free parking (except in Tübingen):
Rothenburg ob der TauberHotel Gasthof Rödertor (2 nights)
TribergLandgasthof Sonne (1 night)
TübingenIbis Styles Tubingen (1 night)

DAY 1 SCHWABISCH HALL

Arrival at Stuttgart airport and after 111km we arrive at Schwäbisch Hall‘s first stop of the day. A beautiful country worth seeing (this area is full). You can visit the cathedral and the very romantic riverside.

The second and last stop is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the most beautiful villages in Bavaria. Nuremberg airport, in this case, would be the closest, but for the sake of cheap flights, I chose Stuttgart.

DAY 2 ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER

Today we dedicate the day to the beautiful Rothenburg ob der Tauber, here you can find the complete city guide. It can be visited in one day and I consider it the most beautiful of all the countries we have seen.

DAY 3 LICHTENSTEIN CASTLE

On the third day, we go down south and the first stop is Ulm, the city of Albert Einstein. We will not visit the city, we will go straight to Wiblingen Abbey, a library and monastery which will leave you speechless. Before you go look at the timetables, they do not open every day, especially in winter.

The Lichtenstein Castle is the second stop of the day, the world-famous Black Forest castle. It is not possible to visit it in the months from January to March, in this period I do not recommend a visit, here all the useful info on the castle.

DAY 4 TRIBERG

For the fourth day, we move to the Black Forest area, in particular, the area of the cuckoo clocks. These types of watches are very famous in this part of Germany, you can find them of all types and sizes. The first stop of the day is Triberg, a small tourist town, excellent for stopping for lunch.

The second stop in the city is the small town of Schonach, where the world’s largest cuckoo clock is located. The entrance costs only € 2, I recommend you enter even if you can photograph the watch from the parking lot. The owner will explain the history and mechanism of the watch to you.

DAY 5 TüBINGEN

Last day in the city of Tübingen, a very famous university city in Germany. The city is very nice to visit, especially the part of the castle 5min from the center on walking. For dinner or lunch, I recommend the Historische Weinstube Forelle restaurant, excellent quality, and price.
